Species laboratory mouse
Strain Type COI (coisogenic strain),MSR (mutant strain)
Mutant Type TG (Transgenic)
Other Names Oog1-Cre
Background Strain C57BL/6
Strain Description
1.  Transgenic mice carry the BAC-based Oog1 transgene that is engineered to co-express Cre recombinase upon transcriptional activation of Oog1, utilizing an additional IRES sequence for simultaneous translation. In parallel, an independent transcription unit drives the overexpression of GFP under the control of the ubiquitous CAGGS promoter. The GFP cassette is flanked by two loxP sites, allowing it to be excised and replaced with a microRNA targeting mouse tyrosinase upon Cre-mediated recombination. As a result, this recombination event may also alter the coat color of the transgenic mice, changing it from black to gray. The offspring with a gray coat color were observed to have the transgene (cre). Also, the occurrence of gray pups is much lower than usual.
2.
GFP expression can be visually detected from the neonatal stage, allowing for the identification of transgene-positive pups.
3.  In female hemizygous transgenic mice, every oocyte exhibits maternal Cre activity during oogenesis, enabling Cre-loxP recombination after fertilization—even in embryos that do not inherit the Oog1-Cre transgene. This strain is particularly useful when transient Cre activity is desired to eliminate paternally derived floxed alleles in early embryos without passing on the Cre transgene to the offspring. As a result, breeding time and the number of animals required for subsequent removal of the Cre transgene can be significantly reduced by mating with females of this strain.
